  • Describe your SAE:
My SAE has consisted of Diversified Livestock Production. My brother got me started showing livestock when i was in the 4th grade. I currently show cattle, sheep, and swine. In this diversfied program, the market animals are used for meat production, while the production females are put back into a breeding program. My father and I share a beef cattle operation where we raise commercial beef cattle.

    What is your favorite CDE:
    Livestock Evaluation

    Most memorable FFA Moment:
I actually just experienced my most memorable FFA moment, and it was at week 6 of Camp Clements Leadership Training Camp!  Two fellow state officers and I had just finished reflections and were sitting on the edge of the stage talking to FFA members, when we noticed somebody in the back that was upset.  We went to comfort him, but was beat to him by several other FFA members.  We talked for hours, about our week at camp, our lives, and everything in between.  I walked out of the auditorium that night a changed person and with 7 new friends that I know I can always count on.

    Who is your role model?
My role model is Tim Barnes..  When I first started showing sheep, my family knew nothing at all about how to take care of them, much less the show ring.  Tim began coaching me on how to feed, and the proper way to exhibit a lamb to get the absolute best out of him/her.  Nobody made Tim help me; he did not get a big fancy award or praise of any kind, but even after his son graduated, his mentoring continued.  Tim was not worried about "letting his show secrets get out."  He was more concerned about helping others grow and become their personal best. He is not only the true definition of selfless service, he is my mentor and my friend.

    What are your career plans?
I wish I knew exactly what I want to do, but the truth is, I want to keep my options open!  Being an Ag Communications and Education major gives me many options once I get out of school.  I have considered UT Extension, being an Agriculture Education teacher, or even being a journalist for an agricultural magazine!

What advice would you give to a greenhand?
As a freshman, I recommend getting involved in your chapter!  There are so many great opportunities that FFA offers directly to freshman, such as Creed Speaking and Opening and Closing Ceremonies.  These are great ways to not only compete, but you will also have the opportunity to meet other members in your sections, regions, and possibly the state.
Another great opportunity is running for Star Greenhand, later on in the year.  As a freshman, I know that FFA seems like a scary thing that is a lot of work, but it is so incredibly worth it!  Hard work pays off, and the sooner a member gets involved, the more opportunities they will have to gain from this organization!
